2017 21st University Kendo Taikai

Twelve Oxford University students traveled to Cambridge to compete in the 21st University Kendo Taikai. We are very proud of all those who made the journey, and are happy to share the results with the rest of the Oxford Kendo community!

Our open team, consisting of Ellen Hang, Junko Takata, Aidan Daly, Ryan O’Reilly, and Rick Collins, won FIRST PLACE, defending our title from last year!! Our kyusha team, consisting of Perry Wang, Matthew Hillman, Theo Keeping, Tomoki Yamamoto, and Kathy Wu took home second place after a well-fought final against Imperial College London! Our mens captain Rick Collins also took home silver in mens open individuals, while our womens captain Junko Takata took home bronze in womens open individuals!

We’d also like to congratulate our new members Matthew Hillman, Tiffany Duneau, and Lee Wesley on fighting so well in their first shiai! Finally, we’d like to congratulate Theo Keeping on passing his Ikkyu and Kathy Wu and Ryan O’Reilly on passing Shodan after a very strict grading! Thank you all for training with and supporting us! We will continue to work hard and set our sights on victory in the Varsity Match against Cambridge in April!
