Congratulations to the Oxford and Oxford University teams who competed in this year’s Mumeishi Taikai held on Saturday November 17th.
Taikai report by Sam Wilkin:
Four teams from Oxford joined the Mumeishi 3’s taikai along with more than 70 other teams from France, Poland, Belgium, Lithuania, Malta, Germany, Norway, Italy and of course the UK.
Three of the Oxford teams made it through the first round, with Oxford Ladies beating the British Army and Oxford University A beating Krakow. Both matches came down to a fight-off (daihyousen), with Yukie Williams and Alex Browne carrying their respective teams through.
Oxford University B lost to Tetsu Ryuu by the narrowest possible margin. After a draw in the team matches, the taisho (third player) of each team entered a fight-off. On a close point (men for Oxford Uni, do for Tetsu Ryuu), each player received a flag from one judge. After a judges’ conference the decision went against Oxford Uni.
Following their third-place finish at the Northern Open in Glasgow one month before, Oxford A advanced farthest of the Oxford teams, reaching the quarter finals at the Mumeishi 3’s. Oxford A beat Queen Mary University, Edinburgh University B, Taiseidoukai B, and Tora, before losing to Mumeishi A, the eventual tournament winners.
